Be early to visit the Topkapi Palace, one of the main attractions of Istanbul

The Topkapi palace was built in 1462 and was for more than 4 centuries the palace of the Ottoman Sultans. It is like a small city and could be compared to the Forbidden City of the Emperors in Beijing, China. Also here there are places like the Harem that could only be entered by the Sultan himself.

Today, the Topkapi Palace is a very popular museum. We recommend you to go there very early. It opens at 9:00 but there is enough to see in the gardens and around the grounds of the Topkapi Palace to arrive one hour earlier. Make sure you enter at 9:00 and start with the museum rooms. When you do this, you will avoid long queues as you see on the pictures. We made the mistake to arrive one hour later and to go first to the Harem.

The real palace entry is in fact at the Greeting Gate or Bab-i-Selam. From this point everything starts with weapon rooms, the government or council of the Sultan (Divan), the Harem with the bliss gate, the throne room, the rooms with the portraits of Sultans, and it goes on and on. It is a small city. If you are really interested, you could stay a full day in the Topkapi Palace. We left after half a day because it was too crowded.

You should certainly visit Topkapi Palace, it is one of the most important historical places of Istanbul but we have some concerns with the number of visitors they allow in. It is far too crowded. Probably they would like to receive enough earnings to keep the Gardens and buildings in a very good shape. A marvellous place.

  4. What a huge crowd! Is it like this all the time? I love the gold and black nook, what is it? Those awesome drapes and rug, is that where they kneel and pray? The domed ceiling with the hanging ball and windows is very pretty, also those golden gates!

  10. Beautiful decoration but my word, those queues are incredible. It's tiring going round with a crowd so your advice is good.
